Personal start pages: Netvibes, Pageflakes, and Facebook

Robert Scoble asks:

What do you think? If you ran Pageflakes or Netvibes (or one of the other well known “home pages”) what would you do?

He asks this question in response to this article: Pageflakes, Netvibes Take on Social Networks: What Chance Do They Have?.

Both Pageflakes, Netvibes, and iGoogle are all trying to be your personal start page. The newly available Netvibes Universe and Pageflake Pagecasts, which are pages you create and then share are awesome technologies. I've written about all three of these sites very favorably in the past, and quite honestly think they are wonderful. I use them all. What I didn't see coming, however, was Facebook walking right into their space and deliverying a knockout blow.

Pageflakes is trying to reinvent itself by adding social networking capabilities, but that is not going to work either. Too little too late...

Human contact trumps content every single time. The game is over for Netvibes and Pageflakes before it's even started. iGoogle will hang-on because it's Google. Facebook has won, and quite honestly that makes me a little sad.

To answer Robert's question, "What would you do?" -- I'd turn out the lights.
