Land-Grant universities are obsolete?

I had someone come to this blog today after using the following Google search query:

land grant universities are obsolete

If they were hoping to find something to support that position on this blog they would be sorely disappointed. I'm a graduate of a Land-Grant, both my children are graduates of Land-Grants, and I think you'd be hard pressed to find a person alive who is more of a Land-Grant zealot.

The Land-Grant mission is as relevant and important today as the day it was created. Could the Land-Grant university system be doing better? You bet! There isn't an institution on the face of the planet that doesn't have room for improvement. But obsolete? Not even close!
