Widgets and syndication feeds spell the end of portals

Niall Kennedy has a good read on the growth of Google Gadgets (widgets) with some interesting numbers on the growth of RSS feed tabs:

The Google gadget ecosystem received 960 million pageviews last week, a 36% jump from numbers reported by the search giant just one month ago.

The growth of syndication feed widgets led the pack with a monthly growth of 159%. The de-portilization of the Web may be happening faster than we think.
