Calling your own cell phone

I have to confess that I rarely answer my cell phone. That‘s not because I‘m too busy to answer it, it‘s because half the time I don‘t even know where it is. For example, the last time I saw it was three days ago when I used it to send an SMS to a confidant. Seriously, I have no idea where it is. One thing I know for sure is that wherever it is its battery is dead.

When I am traveling, however, my cell phone is indispensable. I never travel without it. I use it for email, chatting, and searches. I‘ll surf on my phone from time to time and have some sites bookmarked. I also use Google SMS. I will send the occasional SMS to a confidant. I use Backpack and will send myself SMS reminders with things like my hotel confirmation numbers. Once I even wrote a blog posting from it. I don‘t have a newsreader, but it‘s on my list to find one. Using my phone is like going back in time a couple of years, but it gets the job done and I couldn‘t live without it. That said, the one thing I almost never do with my phone is talk on it.

So when I saw this new service, the Popularity Dialer, I found it kind of amusing.

Have you ever been in a situation where you wished your cell phone would ring? Maybe you wanted to look extra important or popular on that hot date. Or maybe you just needed an excuse to escape from an unpleasant meeting.

With “The Popularity Dialer”, you can plan ahead. Via a web interface, you can choose to have your phone called at a particular time (or several times). At the elected time, your phone will be dialed and you will hear a prerecorded message that‘s one half of a conversation. Thus, you will be prompted to have a fake conversation and will easily fool those around you.

How stupid is that? I‘ll need to find my phone so I can try it. Excuse me, I need to take this call.
